Marriage Counseling- Trends in India

What is marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling is one of the most effective methods to deal with a broken marital relationship. Popularly known as the couple’s therapy, it uses a psychotherapeutic approach to look into the matter. Provided by a licensed counselor, the therapy is done in the form of sessions.  The sessions help in identifying the source of conflict and finding out ways to resolve it. Major emphasis of the therapy is often laid on helping the couples to communicate.

Why is it important?

A broken relationship often leads to an emotional conflict at individual level as well. Moreover, it is not only the couple who undergoes this conflict; a detrimental impact can also be seen in certain cases where the children are involved.

There are certain matters where the couples wish to resolve the conflict but do not know how to do it. Marriage counseling provides aid in this particular area by forming a safe environment for healthy argument and expression.

When do we need it?

Counseling becomes imperative when a sense of frustration begins overshadowing a marriage. There are numerous signs and symptoms which may hint at the need of marriage counseling. Some of these are:-

  • Lack of communication.
  • When factors like work related stress takes over the marriage.
  • Inability to resolve the differences.
  • Sexual disinterest
  • A sense of forced cohabitation

Trends in India

In India, there has been a lack of positive outlook towards counseling and therapy due to the misconceived notions associated with it. However, the present day scenario has seen a major shift towards the therapeutic method. Many therapists have attributed the cause of shift to be the inability of the older generation to understand the conflicts faced by the present day couples, which implies a major cut down on the emotional support system that the couple may require. The therapists have seen an increase of about 300% in number of marriage counseling cases over the past few years. The couples are also seeking pre marital counseling to deal with the anxiety before the wedding.
